Nigeria Strengthens Enforcement on Small-Size Alcohol Packaging Regulations

2026-07-31
Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched a nationwide enforcement campaign to remove alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200ml from circulation.

The action reinforces the Federal Government's existing regulation prohibiting the production, importation and sale of these small-format alcoholic beverage packages in Nigeria.

According to NAFDAC, enforcement teams are carrying out coordinated inspections across the country's six geopolitical zones, covering markets, retail outlets, distribution channels, bars and other sales points. Products found to be in violation of the regulation may be seized, while manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers involved in non-compliant activities may face regulatory sanctions.

NAFDAC stated that the measure aims to address public health concerns associated with small-volume alcoholic beverages, particularly reducing exposure among children and adolescents while promoting responsible alcohol consumption among adults.

The agency clarified that the enforcement is not targeted at compliant manufacturers operating within approved packaging requirements, but focuses on products that fail to meet regulatory standards.

For the beverage and packaging industries, this regulatory development reflects Nigeria's increasing focus on food safety, responsible packaging practices and stricter compliance management. Companies operating in the market are expected to closely monitor regulatory updates and ensure that product packaging meets government requirements.

As Nigeria's FMCG and beverage sectors continue to expand, compliance with packaging regulations will remain an important factor influencing market access and sustainable industry development.
