2026-10-16
A product guide to bottle-grade polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin, including technical specifications and typical packaging applications.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used in beverage and food packaging, including water bottles, tea bottles, edible oil bottles and carbonated soft drink containers. Different packaging applications may require different resin specifications and processing conditions.

Wankai New Materials offers a portfolio of virgin bottle-grade PET resin grades for a range of bottle manufacturing applications. The product range includes grades with different intrinsic viscosity (IV) specifications, allowing manufacturers to evaluate products according to their packaging requirements and production processes.

1. Bottle-Grade PET Resin Product Range

Wankai's bottle-grade PET resin portfolio includes the following grades and typical applications. All of them are in compliance with the regulations of China GB 9685, GB 4806.6, (EU) No 10/2011 and US FDA21 CFR177.1630.

WK-8810.870 ± 0.015Sparkling beverage and carbonated soft drink bottles
WK-9010.870 ± 0.015Large-capacity bottles

The applications listed above are typical uses. Final grade selection should be based on the relevant technical data sheet, bottle design and processing requirements.

2. Water Bottle Grades: WK-801 and WK-801L

WK-801 and WK-801L are bottle-grade PET resin options for water bottle production and related packaging applications.

  • WK-801: IV 0.800 ± 0.015 dL/g
  • WK-801L: IV 0.770 ± 0.015 dL/g

WK-801 is used in applications including drinking water bottles, aseptic-filling beverage containers, snack and dried-fruit packaging, cosmetic bottles and APET sheets.

The choice between grades depends on the required resin specification, preform design and processing conditions. Manufacturers should assess the selected grade against the requirements of their finished packaging.

WK-801L, with its lower intrinsic viscosity, may be considered by water bottle manufacturers whose production processes are suited to this specification. The appropriate grade depends on factors such as preform design, processing conditions and finished-bottle requirements.

3. Hot-Fill Bottle Grade: WK-811 Series

The WK-811 series includes two grades with different intrinsic viscosity specifications.

  • WK-811: IV 0.790 ± 0.015 dL/g
  • WK-811L: IV 0.760 ± 0.015 dL/g

WK-811 and WK-811L are widely used in various mainstream bottle making machines .lt is mainly used in the production of tea, fruit-juice, plant extract beverage, sauce/vinegar and other bottles which requires hot filling/sterilization process. It can meet the requirements of hot filling beverage which the filing temperature is blow 90℃,and can ensure the original flavor of the packed food content. The published product applications for this series include tea bottles and flavoring bottles.

For hot-fill applications, suitability depends on the specific resin grade, bottle design, manufacturing process and filling conditions. The intended filling temperature and finished-container performance should be confirmed through the applicable technical specifications and processing validation. Please note that WK-811L is available in limited stock. Availability should be confirmed with Wankai before placing an order.

4. Edible Oil Bottle Grade: WK-821

WK-821 has an intrinsic viscosity of 0.830 ± 0.015 dL/g and is used in applications including edible oil bottles, medical bottles and APET sheet production. In some markets, it is also used to produce bottles for carbonated soft drinks (CSD), depending on the packaging requirements and processing conditions.

Its published specifications include:

  • Acetaldehyde content: ≤ 1.0 μg/g
  • L-value: ≥ 83.0
  • b-value: ≤ -0.5
  • Moisture content: ≤ 0.20%

These parameters provide reference points for evaluating the resin against specific production requirements. Suitability for a particular packaging application should be assessed in accordance with the relevant technical documentation and applicable regulations.

These parameters provide reference points for evaluating the resin against specific production requirements. Suitability for a particular application, including CSD bottle production, should be assessed based on the bottle design, carbonation requirements, processing conditions and relevant technical documentation.

5. Carbonated Beverage Bottle Grades: WK-851 and WK-881

Wankai offers WK-851 and WK-881 for sparkling beverage and carbonated soft drink (CSD) bottle applications. Both grades have relatively high intrinsic viscosity (IV) specifications and may also be considered for certain large-capacity bottles and containers used for packaging industrial products, such as paints and coatings, depending on the intended use and processing requirements.

WK-851

  • Intrinsic viscosity: 0.880 ± 0.015 dL/g
  • Typical applications: Sparkling beverage and CSD bottles
  • Product characteristic: Fast-reheat performance

WK-881

  • Intrinsic viscosity: 0.870 ± 0.015 dL/g
  • Typical applications: Sparkling beverage and CSD bottles

The two grades have different IV specifications, and WK-851 is distinguished by its fast-reheat characteristic. Depending on customer requirements, both grades may be evaluated for large-capacity packaging or containers intended for paints, coatings and other chemical products. Suitability should be confirmed based on chemical compatibility, container design, processing conditions and the relevant technical requirements.

6. Large-Capacity Bottle Grade: WK-901

WK-901 has an intrinsic viscosity of 0.870 ± 0.015 dL/g and is used for large-capacity bottle applications. WK-901 is intended for large-capacity bottles and containers, including water containers with capacities comparable to those commonly made from polycarbonate (PC), such as 5-gallon water bottles. As a PET-based material, it provides an alternative to PC for manufacturers evaluating materials for large-capacity water containers. Unlike polycarbonate made with bisphenol A (BPA), PET is not manufactured using BPA as a raw material. Final material selection should be based on the intended application, container design and applicable food-contact requirements.

Its published specifications include:

  • Acetaldehyde content: ≤ 1.0 μg/g
  • L-value: ≥ 83.0
  • b-value: ≤ -0.5
  • Moisture content: ≤ 0.20%

The grade is intended for large-size bottles. For specific applications such as 5-gallon water containers, customers should confirm suitability based on the intended container design and processing conditions.

7. Production Capabilities and International Development

Wankai New Materials operates PET production bases in Haining, Zhejiang Province, and Fuling, Chongqing, China. The company's published profile reports a combined annual PET production capacity of approximately 3 million tonnes.

This year, Wankai announced that its 300,000-tonne-per-year food-grade PET project in Nigeria had officially commenced operations. The first batches of bottle-grade PET resin had come off the production line, and quality inspections had been completed.

The Nigeria facility is Wankai's first overseas production project. The company is also advancing its PET project in Indonesia as part of its international development.

These projects represent developments in Wankai's production network. Product availability, specifications and delivery arrangements should be confirmed with the company based on individual customer requirements.

8. Selecting a Suitable PET Resin Grade

When evaluating bottle-grade PET resin, manufacturers should consider:

  • Application: The intended use of the finished bottle or packaging container.
  • Intrinsic viscosity: The IV range specified for the production process and finished product.
  • Processing conditions: The requirements of the injection molding and bottle-forming processes.
  • Finished-container requirements: Relevant mechanical, optical and dimensional properties.
  • Regulatory compliance: Applicable food-contact requirements and regulations in the destination market.
  • Reviewing these factors alongside the product's technical data sheet can help manufacturers identify grades for further evaluation and production trials.
